NY Post- A former high-ranking franchise executive claims she was canned by the team because COO Jeff Wilpon objected to her becoming pregnant out of wedlock, according to a stunning Brooklyn federal court lawsuit filed Wednesday. Jeff is the son of Fred Wilpon, who owns the team.
Penn grad and former soccer player Leigh Castergine said Wilpon and the Mets dumped her from her powerful position as head of marketing and ticket sales last month because the bumbling ownership was “morally opposed” to her out-of-wedlock pregnancy.
“He frequently humiliated Castergine in front of others by, among other things, pretending to see if she had an engagement ring on her finger and openly stating in a meeting of the Team’s all-male senior executives that he is ‘morally opposed’ to Castergine ‘having this baby without being married,’” the suit states.
“Wilpon told her that, when she gets a ring, she will make more money and get a bigger bonus,” the suit states.
Wilpon told Castergine that “something had changed” in Castergine after the birth of her child — “with still no ring on her finger,” the suit states. “Wilpon told her that she was no longer as ‘aggressive” as she used to be.”
When the first female senior vice president in the team’s 52-year history complained about Wilpon’s behavior to the team’s human resources department, she was abruptly terminated, according to the suit.
Castergine, who previously worked for the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic and Boston Bruins, is suing Wilpon personally as well as the team for damages.
Hallelujah! Praise Jesus! Less than 24 hours after I wished a scandal upon the Wilpons on KFC Radio, the Baseball Gods finally smiled on the unwashed masses known as Mets fans. Now do I wish that this scandal had more potential to take down Fred Wilpon? I suppose. He is the CEO of the team and all. But all that would do is speed up the timeline for Jeff taking over the team. However, if you take out the heir of the Wilpon family, you cut out their legs. Now we need the feminist groups to do what they do best and blow this story up to the point where Bud Selig or new commissioner Rob Manfred will have to force a sale.
It is almost like a no-hitter. I am too scared to say anything because there is still so much work to be done. But we are about 4 hitless innings into it and given the weight of the Ray Rice, Jerry Jones, and Bruce Levenson stories, we basically have a Gold glove outfield playing behind us. Ms. Castergine just needs to hire the right lawyers and turn down any bogus settlement offers.
Now is it a shame that a woman had to lose her job for such an absurd reason? Of course. I truly hope she gets paid handsomely for everything she had to put up with (including having to try to sell tickets for that purtid on-field product). To succeed as the VP of Ticket Sales for the Mets, you need to be able to sell a ketchup popsicle to a lady with white gloves. You shouldn’t have to also worry how your numbskull boss views your personal life decisions. Put their feet to the fire, Leigh. And don’t show them any mercy until they are cooked all the way through.
